Giving to the Dickinson State University Foundation can be easy and accomplished in a variety of methods. Donations can support the Foundation’s annual fund, a new or established academic or athletic scholarship, cultural and artistic events on our campus, or towards a specific department or fund. Unrestricted gifts allow the Foundation the greatest flexibility as those dollars go toward the established funding priorities, which support the areas where funding is needed the most. The Foundation accepts the following types of gifts in compliance with its established Gift Acceptance Guidelines.
Cash, Check or Credit Card Gifts
Stock or Securities Transfer
Real Estate or Mineral Deeds
Tangible Personal Property
Bargain Sales
Pledges of Support for up to 10 years
Deferred Gifts – Bequests, Life Insurance, or Life Income Gifts
IRA
Volunteer time or services
Legacy Society
The Legacy Society was established to recognize those who have included the University in their wills, or as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or trust. A revocable gift of a remainder interest or other contingent gifts will also qualify the donor for membership in the Legacy Society.
Creating a Scholarship Fund
The Dickinson State University Foundation provides various options to assist the students at Dickinson State University through the establishment of a scholarship fund. The following are the usual options that donors use to establish their scholarship fund.
Endowed Scholarship Fund
An endowed scholarship requires a minimum principal balance of $5,000 to establish this fund. The initial balance would generate income to be used to fund the scholarship on a yearly basis. The scholarship(s) awarded annually from the endowment would be in the amount equal to five percent of the endowed balance and would be awarded from the earnings of the fund. Remember that the principal balance will not be touched to fund the scholarship as it is protected for perpetuity. (For example: a $10,000 endowment will fund $500 in scholarships per year without ever depleting the $10,000 donation). In addition, any person or corporation can add to the endowed principal at any time, which would generate more income to be used to fund the scholarship.
Annual Scholarship Fund
An annual scholarship can be established through an annual commitment (for example: $500 per year), or can be funded by a large amount up-front for the Foundation to award over a period of time (for example: a $2,500 gift provides a $500 scholarship per year for 5 years.)
Annual Fund leading to an Endowed Fund
This option allows you to award annual scholarships while building your fund to the minimum endowed principal of at least $5,000.
The Dickinson State University Foundation will work together with the donor to determine specific scholarship selection criteria that are agreed upon by both parties.
Planned Giving
The term "planned giving" refers to charitable gifts that require some planning before they are made. Planned gifts are popular because they can provide valuable tax benefits and/or income for life. Whether a donor uses cash or other assets, the benefits of funding a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving very attractive to both the donor and the Dickinson State University Foundation.
Potential Benefits of Planned Gifts
· Increase current income for the donor or others
· Reduce the donor’s income tax
· Avoid capital gains tax
· Pass assets to family at a reduced tax cost
· Make significant donations to charity
With the assistance of a well-informed accountant, attorney or financial advisor, anyone can craft a planned gift to meet his or her charitable and financial goals.
Planned gifts include bequests, trusts, and contracts between a donor and a charity. Basic descriptions of the most popular types of planned gifts are:
NEW! – IRA Charitable Gift – A new law has been enacted making it easier for donors 70 ½ years of age or older to give to the Foundation through their IRA or Roth IRA. During the calendar years of 2006 and 2007 a donor may give up to $100,000 each year, available for those whose IRA distribution is includible ordinary income to the IRA owner. The IRA charitable rollover will qualify for the donor’s required minimum distribution. There is no charitable income tax deduction with this method; however, there is also no inclusion either. Donors can give 50% of adjusted gross income from their regular assets and then make “over and above” gifts from their IRA. Since the IRA is not included in their taxable income, it will have no impact on their regular income and other charitable gifts.
Bequest - When a donor decides to leave assets to the Dickinson State University Foundation in their will, they are making a bequest. The donor's estate will receive a charitable estate tax deduction at their death, when the gift is made to the Foundation.
Retirement Assets – Distributions from certain kinds of retirement assets – such as IRA’s, tax-sheltered annuities, and 401(K) and 403(b) plans, are subject to income tax and may be subject to generation-kipping taxes and estate taxes. However, gifts of these assets will not be taxed if they are paid directly to the Foundation as beneficiary. You can designate all or a certain percentage of your retirement assets to go to the Foundation.
Life Insurance – By designating the Foundation as the beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance contract, you can make a significantly larger charitable gift than may be possible out of your current assets. And, if you make the Foundation the owner of the contract, you can deduct the premiums as you pay them.
Gift Annuity - A gift annuity is a contract between the Dickinson State University Foundation and a donor. In return for a donation of cash or other assets, the Foundation agrees to pay a fixed payment for life or a specified time period to the donor. The donor also can claim a charitable tax deduction. Income from a gift annuity can be deferred for a period of years. Deferred gift annuities are often set up by younger donors to supplement retirement income.
Charitable Remainder Trust - This trust makes payments, either a fixed amount (annuity trust) or a percentage of trust principal (unitrust), to whomever the donor chooses to receive income. The donor may claim a charitable income tax deduction and may not have to pay any capital gains tax if the gift is of appreciated property. At the end of the trust term, the Foundation receives whatever amount is left in the trust.
Retained Life Estate - A donor may make a gift of his personal residence or farm to the Dickinson State University Foundation and retain the right to live there for the remainder of his or her life. The donor receives an immediate income tax deduction for the gift. At the donor's death, the Foundation can use or sell the property.
